Katy is my fourth daughter, my fourth adoption from China and my first special needs child. Katy has a form of spina bifida and does not have control over her bowel or bladder.
Katy has a ready smile, cheerful attitude and is always willing to help! However...
Katy has behavioral issues. She has impulsive behavior so she does not think before she acts. She talks nonstop in school. She has a very tolerant, reserved teacher so when her teacher told me she puts Katy's head down about 8 million times a day for talking and then laughs and says, "Not really but you get the point" I knew her talking was A LOT!
Katy has been known to take food out of other children's lunch boxes and eat it as well as she takes things out of other children's desks. She does not seem to have the ability to think through her actions to the end result. We ask her if she understands it is wrong and she says "yes" and I believe she does know it is wrong. It is just that she cannot control her impulses. She has also begun to lie to cover the results of her impulsive behavior. However, at this time, the results are very obvious and we are trying to work with her to tell the truth. It is ALWAYS better than lying.
Katy's grades are slipping because being the class clown is more important than applying herself. Her teacher has now put her in a small group for special help to get her to focus on her studies! There is a time for being the class clown and there is noone better at it than Katy. She really is a lot of fun. Clowning is just not ok though during school learning hours!
Katy certainly keeps us on our toes. My friends joke with me and say, "You cannot have all smooth sailing children. You gotta have one to keep you alert!"
I am sharing this info about Katy to let people know that our family is not perfect, I have challenges and even though I parent five other children, Katy teaches me a lot about parenting and myself.
Love ya KK (her nickname)!

What a beautiful little girl! This is such fun to "meet" your daughters one by one.
I think your friend had good advice. I pray that God will guide you though your challenges and joys.
My father had a hard childhood in his younger years, and he became very social, while his brother coped by being a bully. I think that Katy deals with her past by being a clown. Like you said, there is a time and place for everything. Hopefully, she can overcome her challenges with time, but keep the lightheartedness and sense of humor about her through life's trials.
God Bless you and your family.
Jill :)
Praying, Sherry! Hold on tight and know that God placed this special Treasure in your family because He knew that you guys are up to the challenge of raising her. These little children start life off with many challenges that most children don't have to deal with. I know that I personally would have trouble working it all out within myself if it had been me experiencing what they have in their short lives!:) You're a great Momma doing a great work!
Take care,hollym.:)
